“L’albero di Natale” in natura ha un temibile nemico: l’Ips typographus, un piccolo coleottero che è tanto piccolo quanto dannoso. La sua presenza si nota osservando attentamente la corteccia dell’abete e rilevando piccoli fori di fuoriuscita degli adulti; se poi si stacca la corteccia e si vedono le gallerie non si possono più avere dubbi: si tratta del tipografo.
